Heffalumps and Woozles

The hallucinogenic dream sequence from Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day has recently become one of Miles’ favorite bits. Amazing to see how the images and icons foremost in his mind become interleaved so fluidly with real life. Heard recently that children can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality until age seven. At two, it’s all one big plastic fantastic reality sandwich.

“Miles, what are you and Mommy going to do today?”

“Daddy, we’re going to go down in a gopher hole with Winnie the Pooh and some Heffalumps and Woozles and we’re going to take a train table and trains in there too and grandma will come with us down in the gopher hole and look for honey that’s what we’re going to do, Daddy.”

  1. Ah, memories!! This sequence, the Heffalump sequence, may have been my all-time favorite disney montage too. There’s one line in particular, totally priceless, (if I can remember it) that goes something like this: “They’re pink, they’re blue, they’re black, they’re white……They’re round, they’re square…THEY’RE A TERRIBLE SIGHT!!!……They tie themselves in HORRIBLE knots……..They come in stripes……and polka dots.” The “horrible knots” part cracked me up every time. The Heffalumps and woozels are, meanwhile, bam-bam-bam transforming themselves, replete with the shot of them literally all tied up in knots—-ears to fingers to feet—-bouncing rhythmically upside down. Forget “Reefer Madness.” Heffalumps ‘n’ woozels and Dumbo’s “Pink Elephants On Parade” every time, man.

Oh, and it’s great how Tigger says to Pooh in the same sequence:

Pooh: Effalumps and Woozels?!! What do they do?

Tigger: Oh, nothing. Just steal honey……

  2. I know! I know! The sequence is utterly psychedelic. And fun.

Sad news: Paul Winchell, voice of Tigger, died in his sleep yesterday. He was also the voice of Hanna-Barbera’s Dastardly Dawg, and an early ventriloquist.

    Time goes…

  3. The dream sequence was during the short tape “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” I suggest you buy it.. I’m sure they’d have it on Ebay or something :) Good luck!
